It is suggested that the luminosity enhancements observed after the termination of X-ray bursts from several sources are due to rapid thermonuclear burning in the material which accreted onto the star during the main burst. The conditions in the burst material are such that helium burning is initiated during the burst and continues after the accretion flow stops. Several other burning processes are considered. Owing to an approximate temperature-independent energy-production rate, the ratio of the burst energy and the enhancement luminosity results in an estimate for the surface potential of the neutron star. The resulting neutron-star masses are of the order of 1 solar mass for solar abundances.
