Large rapid changes in the light curves of U Cep outside eclipse were observed during transient states of high mass transfer. The most prominent feature was a broad deep dip which appeared near orbital phase 0.6 and removed up to 46% of the ultraviolet light of the B star. Circumstellar-cloud and cool-spot models are explored as possible explanations; the latter is shown to be in substantial agreement with observations. Spots can evidently appear or disappear on a time scale of about one week, in response to an increase or decrease of the contemporary rate of mass transfer.
