Results are presented for a statistical survey of the frequency of occurrence and properties of double and multiple interacting galaxies in the vicinity of bright nearby spiral galaxies. Fields with a radius of 1 deg were searched around 99 bright galaxies of all morphological types, and an identical survey was performed concurrently in 99 'control' fields free of bright galaxies. The results are found to establish an excess of the subclass of multiple nonequilibrium systems in the galaxy fields as compared with the control fields. The average density of interacting systems in the general background is computed, the significance of the excess around the galaxies relative to this background is tested, and it is shown that the apparent excess of nonequilibrium systems occurs predominantly among spiral galaxies of types Sa - Sc. The nature of this excess is considered along with the origin of the physical companions.
