The configuration for the Long Wavelength Array (LWA) is uncertain at this early stage of the project. The inter-related questions of the uv coverages for snapshot and long observations and the corresponding beam and sidelobe characteristics will be most important in the final design. But external factors likely will be significant, too, including 1) the locations of the 10 New Mexico Array (NMA) stations, 2) the existing (and proposed) optical-fiber networks and interconnections, 3) the existing road networks, 4) and the optical-fiber network and other infrastructure for the VLA.
The studies reported here are preliminary and address three questions:. The first is the degree of central condensation of the LWA configuration. The second, more specific question is a configuration for Phase 2 of the LWA that can be formed from the NMA sites and the prototype stations. The third is the effect of moving the central core relative to the NMA sites.
