Profiles fitted by Morton and Morton (1972) to high-resolution measurements of the rich absorption spectrum of PHL 957 reveal many more asymmetrical features than one expects due to the overlapping of randomly positioned, symmetrical lines. It is argued that the asymmetry is intrinsic if these lines arise in extended rotating envelopes of intervening galaxies. A description is given of how the shapes of several lines in a single redshift system can be used to discriminate between this explanation and the alternative explanation that the asymmetrical lines are due to blends of overlapping symmetrical features which arise in adjacent clouds radiatively accelerated by the QSO. Observations of PHL 957 and some other high-redshift QSOs are suggested that would be particularly useful in connection with these ideas.
