We analyze the environment of low-redshift quasars using data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We find that quasars and galaxies are similarly clustered and that quasars systematically avoid high density regions. The immediate neighborhoods of quasars are populated by blue star-forming galaxies. In contrary to star formation in galaxies, which is related to the presence of close companions, we find that AGN fueling does not require the presence of close companions.
