Twelve Type II OH/IR sources have been monitored at approximately half-year intervals during the last two years in the 1612-MHz OH line. Intensity variations of nine of the sources show a phase lag of the high-velocity flux relative to the low-velocity flux. The distribution function of the phase lags has a median value of 9 deg and ranges from -19 deg to +24 deg. The probability of this being due to chance is estimated to be less than 10 per cent. If the time lags are interpreted as differences in path length, the mean OH shell diameter is (4 + or - 2) by 10 to the 16th power cm, in agreement with values obtained through indirect arguments.
