The contributions of countries around the world to astronomy are discussed. The nations examined include Chile, Brazil, Argentina, South Africa, New Zealand, Australia, India, Indonesia, Japan, China, Israel, the Soviet bloc, the U.K., and western continental Europe. Heavy emphasis is given to the U.K., West Germany, and France. Existing observatories and missions as well as projected ones are described. For developing countries, major projects are discussed. Important international astronomical organizations are covered, including the European Space Agency, the European Science Foundation, and the European Physical Society.
