Disk evolution is governed by angular momentum transport, infall of mass, mass loss through winds, and accretion onto the parent star. We review in detail the disk evolution formalism. We then describe current understanding of three angular momentum transport mechanisms: magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence driven by the magneto-rotational instability (MRI), gravitational instability, and convective instability. We conclude with speculation about how these mechanisms might influence disk evolutionary tracks.
