The close analogies between optical/IR synthesis arrays and the VLBA suggest that the development of optical/IR interferometry may follow a similar path, i.e. from an initial phase of experimental projects to the delivery of general purpose facilities. In this paper I summarise the relevant similarities between the radio and optical/IR regimes, review the status and potential prospects for optical/IR interferometry in the near-to-mid-term, and present some hopefully informed "guesses" as to how the field will develop over the next 10 years.
