It is shown that there is a fourfold increase in dome microthermal activity inside a dome immediately after opening. There is thought to be a loose relationship between the observed local microthermal activity and the image blur. The effect becomes most pronounced for the best seeing conditions, when the upper atmospheric disturbances and local microthermals are least related. In this case, the observed image degradation follows the local (dome) microthermal activity directly. In the 0.2 to 20 Hz portions of both the temperature and image motion spectra, a -2/3 slope exists in accordance with the Kolmogorov model. The model is also representative of binary star relative motion at frequencies less than 2 Hz. It is noted that the wind fluctuations also follow the Kolmogorov -5/3 fall off with frequency in the 0.01 to 10 Hz portions of the one-dimensional wind power spectra. Young's (1974) observation is substantiated in that small telescope image motion, perhaps caused by dome thermal activity, causes large aperture image blur while image motion in the large telescope is associated with the high altitude far field turblence described by the Kolmogorov relationship.
