Radio wave propagation through the interstellar medium imprints observable effects upon the detected signals due to scattering from interstellar density fluctuations. Here I review how VLBI observations, and those with the VLBA in particular, have probed both the microphysics of the interstellar plasma and its Galactic distribution. I also highlight some of the opportunities for future observations.
