Combining a supernova's transverse angular expansion velocity, determined with VLBI, with its radial linear expansion velocity measured with optical spectroscopy, yields a direct estimate of the distance to the supernova and thus to its host galaxy. With this Expanding Shock Front Method (ESM), we determined directly the distances to SN 1993J in M81 of 4.3± 0.6 Mpc and to SN 1979C in M100 in the Virgo Cluster of 16.5± 2.5 or 19.8± 3.0 Mpc, depending on whether the supernova is a source with a filled center, i.e. a uniform sphere, or a shell.
