The Adler Planetarium's Astro-Science Workshop is a challenging summer program for 20-30 high school students in the Chicago area who have demonstrated exceptional interest and aptitude in astronomy and related sciences. It has been funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation since 2001. Each year, a University of Chicago graduate student holds complete responsibility for the development of his/her own project-oriented curriculum.
The 2005 and 2006 workshops were organized around a single theme: Searching for Asteroids in the Digital Age. Each comprised four weekend sessions, opening with a crash course in observational astronomy and the study of asteroids. Over the second weekend, the participants selected their own targets from the Minor Planet Center's list of asteroids in need of further astrometric study, and they planned and executed their observations with the help of observing specialists at Yerkes Observatory. Over the remaining two sessions, the students analyzed their data and submitted it to the MPC, explored other aspects of astronomy and planetary science, spoke with guest lecturers invited from the astronomical and digital imaging communities, and created a summary web page including animations of their asteroid observations. The curricula are available on the Internet, including instructions on how to observe asteroids and perform astrometry desired by the MPC.
The combined efforts of these two workshops resulted in the submission of 198 useful astrometric positions of 14 asteroids and 2 comet fragments to the MPC, resulting in some cases in major changes to their orbital parameters. In addition, all useful submissions to the MPC are published in the Minor Planet Circulars, and those from ASW 2006 feature the names of the individual students who contributed to the analysis. These publications appear in the Astrophysics Data System and will make impressive contributions to the students' resumes and college applications.
