Generally good agreement is found between the DDO system and the luminosity classifications given by Sandage and Tammann (1979). After removing a systematic shift of 0.25 luminosity class the standard deviation of the difference between luminosity classification of the same galaxy is 0.68 luminosity class. The average standard deviation of absolute magnitudes derived from luminosity classifications are 0.86 m for vdB and 0.86 m for ST. This indicates that the scale advantage for classifications based on large reflector plates is approximately compensated for by the greater homogeneity of the Palomar Sky Survey material.
