Once upon a time, "Computer Security" meant keeping bored teenagers from playing games with your computer and maybe running a virus scanner. Now, computer security involves such concepts as Confidentiality...Integrity...Availability...Non-repudiation...Encryption...and HSPD-12 Smartcards. These are important concepts to understand, especially if you do contracting work with the US federal government. All of this can be expensive, difficult and not always obvious. Further, over-protection may be as bad as under-protection. This session translates some of the jargon into English, discusses the general issues and presents an example science program, demonstrating how to make sense of all this in a scientific environment.
