Over the last decade, the Orion Nebula has remained at the forefront of interstellar matter research. About one-fourth of the papers published in the Astrophysical Journal on the subject of gasseous nebulae deal specifically with M42. One of the chief reasons for such interest in Orion is the process of star formation that has recently occurred there. The Orion region has apparently provided one of the best examples of what is called sequential star formation. Additional topics of interest have been local equilibrium, which includes most interstellar processes not associated with gas motions, dynamical processes, which pose problems that involve the solution of complex equations involving three spatial dimensions as well as the temporal, and irregularities and shock waves, of which the latter play a crucial role in the dynamics of the interstellar gas.
