Observations of the Coma cluster of galaxies are reconsidered and interpreted in terms of a simple spherically symmetric two-component model in order to bracket the range of possible density distributions of the dark matter. Reasonable fits to observational material are possible with models whose mean visual mass-to-light ratio range from about 100 h to higher than about 400 h. The density distribution of the dark background need not be proportional to that of the galaxies. From the models investigated, virtually the only observational constraint on the background density distribution is that its core radius be less than about that of the galaxies. Infinitely condensed isothermal distributions are consistent with observations. The uncertainty in cluster mass distribution is a significant source of systematic error in estimates of cluster mass-to-light ratios, and may also affect detailed results in other areas, such as inferences from X-ray observations.
