The sodium D lines have been measured in 19 giant stars in 47 Tuc, and show a range of 60% in equivalent width at a given color. These variations show a positive correlation with variations in CN strength on the section of the giant branch with V-IK greater than 1.0 and less than 1.4 and V greater than 12.1 but less than 12.6. Both giant branch and asymptotic giant branch stars show this behavior. This confirms and extends the correlation found by Cottrell and Da Costa (1981) and appears to support the suggestion that primordial abundance variations are responsible.
