Results are presented of dual-polarization CW radar observations of Mars made at Arecibo during the 1980 opposition. The observations are approximately centered on the Tharsis Ridge. It is noted that a large proportion of the echo from this region is in the form of diffuse-depolarized scatter. The strongest depolarization is seen as coming from the Tharsis Ridge, although detectable power is observed in both polarizations out to each limb. The peak of the depolarization enhancement is found to coincide with the longitudes of the major Tharsis volcanoes. Whereas it is clear that the depolarization cannot be confined solely to these volcanic shields, it is thought likely that most of the enhanced depolarization derives from extreme decimeter-scale roughness of volcanic origin. The existence of extensive lava flows over the Tharsis plains is seen as supporting this view.
