HD 5980 is a very massive Wolf-Rayet binary system in the Small Magellanic Cloud whose spectral characteristics gradually changed between the late 1970's and 1993, culminating in an eruptive state lasting 1 year. The erupting star is believed to have been an O-type supergiant prior to its unusual transition. The eruption was similar in some respects to luminous blue variable (LBV) events in which the effective temperature decreases and mass-loss rates increase. HD 5980 is extraordinary, however, because of its huge luminosity (similar to that of Eta Carinae) and the fact that near eruption maximum its spectrum resembled that of a B1-star, instead of displaying the much cooler effective temperatures generally observed in LBV eruptions. I will review the characteristics of the eruptive event in HD 5980 and discuss the role that the presence of a binary companion may have played in keeping it on the ``blue" side of the HRD.
