By using a suitable coordinate transformation we show that the Robinson-Trautman solution of the Einstein equations with pure radiation may be expressed in a form which can be compared with the generalized Newman-Unti solution due to Ludwig. In this way we are able to derive a formula for the news function for gravitational radiation. In the axisymmetric case our result reduces to that found recently by Gönna and Kramer who used a method based on Bondi-Sachs coordinates.
