We have observed the spectra of 20 little researched cataclysmic variables (CVs) or objects that have been classified as such. We have identified 13 (65%) as CVs and consider the other 7 as unlikely to be CVs. (Table 1, Col.8). Using more material than previous authors had, we have identified 1 DA type white dwarf and 4 binary systems, together with the spectral types of the components. Our new data does not support the previous classification of Herbig Ae/Be star for FY Per; rather, it should be a CV. For PG 1712+493 we have isolated the spectra of the central O-type star and the surrounding nebula.
