The feasibility of the observation of molecular oxygen and water vapor in the Martian atmosphere has been studied for the case of an orbiting limb sounding absorption spectrometer, in the visible and near infrared parts of the spectrum. The resolution and signal to noise ratio requirement for this instrument are assessed as a function of the expected concentrations of the observed species and of the grazing altitude. Synthetic spectra, computed in the observational conditions, permit to check the sensitivity of the technique.
