A method of interpreting the profiles of weak molecular lines on the sun is developed which makes it possible to find from the measured line depths and half-widths the mean parameters of the molecular layer: the temperature, the number of molecules in a vertical column of unit cross section, and the radial and tangential components of the turbulent velocity. The proposed method is suitable for the analysis not only of optically thin lines but also lines of moderate optical depth, as well as lines for which the oscillator strength of the transition is poorly known. The possibilities of the considered method of interpreting molecular spectra are demonstrated and its errors are estimated on the example of CO lines calculated from the HSRA (Harvard-Smithsonian Reference Atmosphere) model.
