An attempt was made to identify absorption lines in quasar spectra with H2 and CO molecular lines on the basis of actual UV spectra of the Galactic interstellar medium. It was found that no molecular lines could be detected in the spectra of the quasars 4C 05.34, 0Q 172, or 0830 + 115. No single identification could be accepted as statistically reliable in a fourth quasar, PHL 957. In addition, it is found that none of the candidate molecular line systems is supported by definite coincidences with atomic and ionic lines for the same redshift. It is concluded that because of the large number of chance coincidences the presence of H2 and CO molecular absorption in the spectra of the four quasars investigated cannot now be confirmed.
