We present an analysis of the HST/STIS and FUSE absorption-line spectra of the intergalactic absorption toward QSO H1821+643. These ultraviolet spectra are among the very best obtained for any low-redshift QSO. The data reveal metal-line systems, photoionized Lyman-alpha absorbers, and broad Lyman-alpha lines indicative of hot, collisionally ionized gas. The widths of the broad Lyman-alpha lines and the presence of O VI absorption indicate that many of the absorbing regions along the sight line are associated with the Warm-Hot Intergalactic Medium (WHIM) at temperatures of 100,000 to 1,000,000 K. We consider this absorption in the context of the distribution of galaxies at these same redshifts, and discuss the properties of the absorbers and their relationship to galaxies.
