Soft Gamma Repeaters (SGRs) and Anomalous X-ray Pulsars (AXPs) are now widely accepted as being magnetars, where magnetars are highly magnetized neutron stars whose emission is powered by magnetic field decay. AXP 4U 0142+61 is one of the most rotationally stable AXPs, such that a phase-coherent timing solution was maintained for 10 years (Dib, Kaspi, Gavriil, 2007, ApJ in press). A glitch may have occurred around March 1996 but was not required by the data. This is in sharp contrast with the unstable spin-down histories of SGRs; however, here we report on the detection of bursts from 4U 0142+61 such as those seen in SGRs. This was the first time such a phenomenon has been observed from this source, making this the fifth AXP from which SGR-like bursts have been observed. This source has been monitored for > 10 yr with the Rossi X-ray Tiing Explorer (RXTE), but all six bursts detected from this source only occurred in the last year. Coincident with the bursts were timing anomalies and pulsed flux enhancements and other changes to the persistent emission. The sixth burst from this source was the longest ( 30 min) and most energetic one ever observed from this source and the pulsed flux increased such that bright individual pulsations were discernible in our RXTE data. These bursts can only be explained within the context of the magnetar model. We discuss the implications of our observations on the magnetar model.
