The optical kinematic results of Fabry-Perot interferometry in H-alpha light are presented for the spiral galaxy NGC 6946, together with an analysis of its structure. Two main branches going out from the nucleus are noted, leading to two different types of arms. It is suggested that these distinct, respectively open and nearly circular arm morphologies may correspond to two different spiral wave modes. Isovelocity curves have been derived from radial velocity measurements of the ionized hydrogen corresponding to the disk component and the diffuse emission in the spiral arms. The observations show that the H II regions do not share the same kinematics, and that there are systematic velocity effects associated with the spiral arms. These systematic effects are interpreted in the framework of density wave theory. If NGC 6946 is characterized by two main spiral arms, there is no inner Lindblad resonance, and the outer one takes place just after the end of the spiral structure.
