In this talk the concepts local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) and Non Local Thermodynamic Equilibrium (NLTE) will be described, along with the various processes responsible for the departure from LTE of the atmospheric emissions in planetary atmospheres. Also a review will be presented of: (i) the planetary atmospheric measurements where evidences of NLTE have been found; and (ii) the theoretical and computational methods used for the determination of temperature, heating and cooling rates and radiative fields in planetary atmospheres under NLTE conditions.
