A review of the key technical and cost parameters that will need to be met for solar power satellites and other space solar power systems to become cost competitive as utility-scale energy sources. The parameter that may have most room for improvement is specific power, or the more general ratio of in-orbit peak power to mass launched from Earth. Options to achieve a ratio close to or higher than 1 kW/kg are reviewed.
