Radio studies of solar flares by the Very Large Array (VLA) of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory are discussed along with the results of cm and X-ray observations of flares. The synthesis of maps of regions of the sun just prior to flares and the validation of solar flare models using VLA are treated. Theories of the source of a flare's energy, and of the processes that produce one, are summarized. One unusual flare is cited as support for the flare model in which a current sheet develops at the interface between two closed loops.
