Molecular ions are sensitive in a direct way to the ionization processes in molecular gas in space. Some of them play crucial roles in ion-neutral chemistry. Because the ionizing photons or particles have energies much greater than the mean thermal energy in the gas itself, the abundances of molecular ions always reflect extreme departures from thermodynamic equilibrium. Two exemplary case studies are considered here: the excitation of metastable H3+ and a possible non-equilbrium source of small molecular anions in photon-dominated regions (PDR) of molecular gas.
