Laser vaporization is being explored as a means to seed supersonic expansions of rare gases with species which are solid under normal conditions. The quantity of vaporized material must reach a level suitable for cavity ringdown laser absorption spectroscopy which we use to probe the expansions. The technique is applied to anthracene which is a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon, a family of molecules relevant to astrophysics.
