Radiation fields and kinematical perturbations can modify the chemical composition of the molecular interstellar medium in starburst and AGN galaxies. We have characterized the molecular chemistry in two star-forming (IC 342, M 82) and one AGN (NGC 1068) nearby galaxies through multispecies observations. The gas composition in these sources is driven by shocks, UV radiation or X-rays across hundreds of parsecs. Molecular line observations have the potential to unveil gas processing by the feeding and feedback mechanisms that drive the evolution of starburst and AGN episodes.
