Observations made by the Very Large Array of nonflaring loop-like structures in the solar corona at a wavelength of 20 cm and angular resolution of 3.7 x 5 arcsec are reported. The loop-like structures are shown to join regions of opposite magnetic polarity as seen on magnetograms of the longitudinal component of the photosphere magnetic field. No detectable circular polarization is found, suggesting that the 20-cm loops are optically thick and that the brightness temperatures are equal to the electron temperatures of the hot, dense plasma trapped within the loop. Calculation of the physical parameters of the 20-cm loop results in a semilength of about 5 x 10 to the 9th cm, maximum electron temperature of about 3 x 10 to the 6th K, pressure of about 2 dyn/sq cm and electron density of about 2.5 x 10 to the 9th/cu cm, which are all consistent with the properties of coronal loops detected at X-ray wavelengths. The discovery of the 20-cm features thus makes possible the study of the detailed structure, evolution and preflare activity of coronal loops.
