Although it ranks amongst the nearest (at d ~ 3 Mpc) and brightest (flux ~ 2e-12 erg/cm^2/s) ULXs, NGC 4190-ULX1 has not yet been observed in the modern era of X-ray astronomy. We propose to remedy this omission with new observations designed to probe its underlying nature. We have recently been awarded Chandra HRC and HST ACS observations to identify its optical counterpart. Here, we propose expanding this study with a 60-ks XMM-Newton observation to provide the first detailed view of its X-ray properties. We will investigate specific characteristics of the X-ray spectral and temporal data - for example the possibility of break features in the shapes of both the energy and fluctuation power spectra - to provide a diagnosis of the mass of the compact object underlying its extreme X-ray emission.
