From the analysis of spectroscopic data (GHRS and STIS on board HST) on a sample of nearby dwarf galaxies, we have detected three different Lyα line profiles. These show either pure emission, centered at the rest wavelength of the galaxy, a P-Cygni profile with a sharp blue edge and an intensity maximum red-shifted by a few hundreds of km s-1 from the rest frame of the host galaxy or, as in ˜ 40% of the sources, a full saturated absorption. The same profiles are frequently found in high redshift sources. All of these Lyα line profiles occur naturally under the assumption that it is the feedback from recently formed stellar clusters what modifies the properties of the interstellar medium, causing the variety of observed profiles. Here we provide a brief summary of our observations and of our basic model and its consequences.
