Analysis of Greenwich sunspot data shows that the velocity dispersions of single sunspots are independent of latitude and are much larger for areas less than about 2 x 10 to the 8th square kilometers than for larger areas. In addition, the maximum longitudinal velocity dispersion of about one degree per day is twice as large as the maximum latitudinal velocity dispersion. These findings may indicate a kinematic interaction between sunspots and supergranules or systematic motions similar to those characteristic of bipolar groups. Finally, pore emergence may account for some of the increased dispersion at small areas, but probably not the anisotropy.
