We propose to observe the Narrow Line Seyfert galaxy Mkn 1239 with XMM for 80ks. Mkn 1239 is a highly polarized and reddened AGN in the optical and has a very complex X-ray spectrum: besides the steep soft X-ray spectrum the source shows a very strong emission line complex around 0.9 keV, most likely NeIX and an unusual flattening of the spectrum towards higher energies. Such flattening of the spectrum can be interpreted in the context of the presence of a partial covering absorber showing that Mkn 1239 is intrinsically highly absorbed. The surprise is the strong NeIX line with the absence of any otherdetectable emission line from an ionized gas. With this XMM observation we will be able to detect the other emission lines allowing us to constrain the gas parameters.
