The processes of star and star cluster formation and evolution leave their imprint on the observable properties of the cluster populations and star populations of galaxies. This review examines four basic features of galaxies that relate to these properties: the initial cluster mass function, cluster formation efficiencies, cluster specific frequencies and cluster disruption lifetimes. Recent evidence suggests that these quantities can be very different for different galaxies and for different positions in (at least) large galaxies. The data are still sparse but begin to look promising. This review examines problems with both observations and their interpretation, using results for four Local Group galaxies as examples.
