The purpose of this contribution is to show that protoplanetary disks can have a large variety of shapes, very different from the simple flaring geometry usually assumed. These shapes follow naturally from a model in which the equation of vertical hydrostatic equilibrium is coupled to the equations for irradiation by the central star, modeled with 2-D/3-D continuum radiative transfer. There is observational evidence that these shapes are indeed `seen' in disks around Herbig Ae/Be stars, indicating that an understanding of disk geometry is important for interpreting observations of protoplanetary disks. Also we will argue that the 2-D/3-D radiative transfer effects may influence the conditions for planet formation and disk--planet interaction.
