We present here successful detection of the known planetary companion to 51 Peg, using Exoplanet Tracker (ET), an instrument based on a new Doppler technique known as `dispersed fixed-delay interferometry', at the KPNO 2.1m telescope. RMS precisions of 11.5 m s-1 and 7.9 m s-1 were obtained for 51 Peg and Eta Cas (a radial velocity stable star) respectively, over a period of a few days.
An improved next-generation ET is now being developed at Penn State for RV surveys which is expected to achieve a total detection efficiency in excess of 22% from above the atmosphere to the detector. In principle this kind of instrument can also been designed for multi-object observation, and could be used for cost-effective all-sky Doppler surveys, leading to a dramatic increase in current Doppler survey speeds.
