We provide a review of the progress made in mapping out the stellar mass-luminosity relation over more than two decades. The 2004 version of the mass-luminosity relation spans stellar masses spanning the range of 0.07 to 33 M&sun;. Special emphasis is given to the red dwarfs, which comprise roughly half of the Galaxy's stellar mass even though they have the lowest stellar masses.
