Total cross sections have been determined for the endoergic reactions, ('28)Si((alpha),p)('31)P, ('39)K((alpha),p)('42)Ca, ('42)Ca((alpha),p)('45)Sc, and ('54)Fe((alpha),p)('57)Co, which occur during advanced burning stages of stellar evolution. The experimental cross sections were extrapolated to threshold using low energy statistical model predictions provided by Woosley. The resulting hybrid cross sections were used to calculate thermonuclear reaction rates for temperatures of interest in explosive nucleosynthesis. Good agreement between theory and experiment was obtained for the ('42)Ca((alpha),p)('45)Sc and ('54)Fe((alpha),p)('57)Co reactions, which fulfilled statistical model criteria. However, the ('28)Si((alpha),p)('31)P and ('39)K((alpha),p)('42)Ca reactions, which accessed a low level density of the compound nucleus, deviated from predicted values by as much as a factor of three. Finally, ground state reaction rates have been represented by analytic functions of the temperature for use in computer codes.
