An interpretation of wave-like phenomena observed in cometary ion tails in terms of solar wind interaction with the tails through Kelvin-Helmholtz helical instabilities results in calculations that are applied to the comets Kohoutek (1973f), Arend Roland (1957 III) and Morehouse (1908c). Despite some disagreement with previous work, it is demonstrated that the growth rate of the K-H helical mode, assuming typical parameters, should be significant for wavelengths approximately equal to the tail radius.
