An overview is given of recent theoretical and observational developments relevant to star formation. In particular, some theoretical models of protostar evolution are discussed as well as current ideas concerning the causes of the collapse of a protostellar gas cloud. Observational data, relevant to the formation of low mass stars in nearby dust clouds are reviewed. Finally, as an example of high mass star formation, recent radio and infrared observations of the Orion molecular cloud are discussed.
