Automatic object detection is one of the basic tasks performed by an image understanding system. Many applications related to the Euclidean distance measurement or angular position of point light sources (astronomical tracking, optical communication in space, etc.) demand a precision that is greater than the diameter of the Airy disk. One of the typical problems is determination of the image center that corresponds to a maximum of intensity. The classical techniques for solving this problem is the centroid methods. However co- ordinates estimation received with the help of these methods have a systematic displacement (mistake). We present an algorithm which allows to reduce a systematic mistake. Two competing methods are used to calculate the co-ordinates of the image center. Comparison of these algorithms with the classical centroid methods is given.
