The tenth asteroid to be discovered, by Annibale De Gasparis in 1849, and so designated (10) Hygiea. It is the fourth-largest asteroid, with a diameter of 408 km. It orbits the Sun at a mean distance of 3.14 AU (470 million km), in the outer part of the main asteroid belt, in a period of 5.55 years.
