ESA's Hipparcos space astrometry satellite, which completed its mission in August 1993, has established an extremely precise reference frame and determined stellar parameters for a large number of stars close to the solar system. The immense data processing task is still going on, and is expected to take a further two years before a satisfactory stellar catalog becomes widely available. Nevertheless, preliminary catalogs have been produced for 100,000 stars in the program, and their parallaxes are estimated to better than 0.002 arcsec, sufficient for distance estimates to be made for stars as far as 1000 light years distant from the Sun. Presented here are some insights into these preliminary results in the form of images of the stellar spatial distribution in Ursa Major, Cygnus, Lyra, Cassiopeia, and Scorpius. Four 3-D fields are illustrated, covering about one-tenth of the entire sky, and an extrapolation of the 3-D field for Ursa Major as it will appear in 60,000 years.
